Indoor Dog Potty - Litter Training/Paper Training

Sometimes it is handy, or even necessary, to train your puppy to use an indoor elimination area.

If you live in a high-rise building, or have limited access to outdoor area, you must choose to litter train or paper train your puppy.

With litter training, you are potty training your puppy to eliminate in a litter box filled with dog litter.  Dog litter supplies can be easily purchased at a pet supplies store.
You should first set up the potty area in a quiet corner with floor that is easy to clean.

Put your puppy in his crate with a chew toy.  After an hour in the crate, allow your puppy to leave the crate and guide him (with a leash) to the litter box.  Be patient and allow the puppy up to five minutes to eliminate in the litter box.  Give your puppy a calm praise once he has eliminated in the litter box.

However, if you puppy does not eliminate after five minutes, walk him back to the crate and leave him in the crate for 15 minutes.  Repeat the entire process again.  After he has eliminated in the litter box, play with him for 30 minutes before returning him to the crate.  You should consistently repeat the process, with an increasing time in the crate (till a maximum of 2 hours), and your puppy would have been indoor litter trained.

Alternatively, you can use a papered surface instead of a litter box.

Newspaper is the natural choice as it is abundant, absorbent and free.  They can also soak up quite a large puddle and easy to pick up once they are soiled.

However, a major drawback of using newspaper in puppy potty training is that the puppy will tend to seek out newspaper when he needs to eliminate.  This is a problem if someone accidentally drops your current daily newspaper on the floor and leave the room.  You can also buy commercial puddle pad or a large roll of unused newsprint in place of newspaper.
