1) Keep a written diary of your puppy’s potty habits. The main advantage of this process is to help you understand your puppy’s natural body rhythm. Specifically, you should be jotting down the time your puppy eats, sleeps and eliminates. The pattern that develops over a few days will help you to anticipate his future needs and schedule appropriate potty outings. This diary will also allow you to spot trends that are developing, and help you to adjust your housetraining methods. If there is a specific pattern that is developing and bothering you, you should start to consult a professional dog trainer, or a vet.
2) You should not punish your puppy if he eliminates in an area other than his designated potty area. Many pups will react to punishment by hiding future poops and puddles where the owner will not find them right away - like behind the desk or under your couch. This may eventually lead to further pee and poop hiding. The punishment may also teaches your puppy that it makes you angry to see him eliminates as he does not understand that you are angry because he eliminates inside the house. This is one of the most important puppy potty training tips that you should remember.
3) No elimination if there is too much excitement. Behave calmly when you take your puppy to his potty area. If there is too much chatter or overly enthusiastic praise, it will cause your puppy to tense his muscles before he finishes eliminating. You will have to calm him down and bring him back to the house before repeating the process.
4) Give your dog as much opportunity to go to the outside toilet as much as possible. This will reduce his opportunity to soil in the house.
