Dog and Puppy Crate Training

Puppies naturally like a den-like or cave protective environment.  The den is a private place, a place of serenity and security.

Crates are modern and clean substitute for the den or cave for puppies.  Crates, also called kennel, are useful tools for puppy training.

There are a variety of enclosures or crates that are available in your nearby pet supply store or catalog.  The most useful for puppy housetraining are the plastic or wire model crates.

When you start crate training your puppy, it may take him a few days to get accustomed to it.  However, once your puppy gets used to the crate, he will start to enjoy the cozy space.

Crate training may take some time and you have to be patient.  Start by leaving the crate door open.  Put some treats inside the crate and encourage your puppy to approach the crate.  When your puppy approaches the crate, and takes the treat, encourage and praise him.  Don’t try to pressure or force him into the crate.

Gradually toss the treats further inside the crate to let your puppy enters the crate.  You should continue to praise and encourage your puppy as long as he stays inside the crate.  Make a game of getting him going in and out of the crate to create a comfortable association with the crate.

When your puppy is comfortable inside the crate for a few moments, gently close the door of the crate.  Give your puppy a treat, praise him and gently open the door.  You should then gradually increase the time that the crate door is closed.

Once your puppy is comfortable being inside the crate for a period of time, you should go out of the room for a while.  Gradually increase the length of time that you are out of the room.  When you re-enter the room, you should try to keep it low key.  After spending a few short periods in the crate, he’ll realize that you’ll always come back and let her out.

Most dogs soon become comfortable with the crate that they will wander into the crate on their own for a private place to rest or nap.

You can also try feeding your puppy his meals inside the crate.  This is a great crate training method to establish a positive association with the crate.  Click here for a great friendly dog training package with an excellent presentation on puppy potty training.
